Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Files Innocent Plea to Accusations of Lying Lawmakers
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.
His lawyer filed the response acting as his counsel in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.
His attorney declared he would try to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple factors including that his defendant, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was charged shortly after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.
Court Developments
At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative told the judge they intended to file multiple motions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, arguing the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was improperly designated to assume control of the legal matter.
The former director's proceedings was initially managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his examination into a different political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.
Judicial Environment
Mr Comey appeared in good spirits as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Failor and child Maureen, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.
Following the reading to the court state his rights and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.
Previous Events
The former director was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about a few months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
While in office, Mr Comey caused a backlash from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the national vote that he was probing political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, causing negative feedback from the Republican party as well.
Ongoing Accusations
The federal government allege Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he misled the legislative body by saying he had not approved someone at the FBI to leak to news outlets details about the FBI investigations.
Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.
Individual Responses
Via social media Mr Comey posted to his online platform after he was indicted, he said he was not guilty and accused Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".
"We have known for years that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
The accusations against the former director surfaced after the former president shared on digital channels demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and other people.
