French authorities will start intercepting small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to disable the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
