Oxford Union President-Elect Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.
The vote against the student leader achieved the necessary two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.
Disputed Comments
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in the United States.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.
Vote Outcome
The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were against the motion.
The notice confirmed that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His statement unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.
His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message accused the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".
The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier condemned the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the union in May.
